Black Church in Brasov

Copyright: Bogdan D.
Black Church (German Die Schwarze Kirche, Hungarian Fekete Templom) is an evangelical church in the Gothic style in Brasov.
Built in around 1380 (probably from 1377) and formerly known as the Church of St. Mary , the building was partially destroyed by the great fire of 1689 (photo), when he received the current name. The Black Church is one of the most important monuments of Gothic architecture in Romania dating from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.
The construction of the church started in 1384 and was completed in 1477. An inscription discovered in the church wall certify the first builder being Thomas, who died in 1410.
Severely damaged by fire, the Black Church was rebuilt with the help of craftsmen come from the Hanseatic city of Danzig, because local craftsmen didn't knew how to close such large sized vaults. The new vaults, howeve, are in Baroque style, notGothic.
The plan used by architects was to a basilica with three naves of equal height, following the type of church-hall favorite in fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in the German space, whence came some of the architects and craftsmen otherwise.
The Black Church is the largest religious edifice in the Gothic style of south-eastern Europe, measuring 89 meters long and 38 meters wide. In this church can hold about 5,000 people.
Black church is famous not only by its size but by other things: the bell is the largest bell in the Romanian space, a bronze one weighing six tons. Black church is known for its great organ with over 4,000 pipes and is one of the largest in South-Eastern Europe. Choir is supported by exterior buttresses decorated with statues of saints EDICO housing. It is one of the few examples of this type of Transylvania. The Oriental Rugs Collection in the Black Church is the richest of its kind in Romania. Weekly organized an organ concert.
